Car Audio

Velodyne's patented High Gain Servo technology, which measures and compensates for excessive cone motion to ensure a distortion-free signal, is a natural choice for car audio installations. The DF-10sc and DF-12sc subwoofers, with separate controller, bring unprecedented clarity to an environment dominated by muddy, boomy sound.
Velodyne introduces its first servo-controlled products designed specifically for automotive applications. The tight, musically accurate sound synonymous with the Velodyne name can be achieved in a mobile environment with the DF-10sc and DF-12sc automotive subwoofers.

All three subwoofers incorporate Velodyne's unique spun-aluminum cones, specifically engineered cone geometry and a proprietary, dual accelerometer-based servo-control system. Here's how it works: an accelerometer mounted on the speaker's voice coil measures the motion of the speaker cone, while a second accelerometer mounted on the die-cast basket measures the motion of the car. The car's motion is then subtracted from the speaker's motion, so that only the music-generating movement remains. This is compared to the sound signal coming from the music source, and the Velodyne controller circuit makes corrections to the speaker instantaneously to assure that only the original music, with no distortion, is reproduced.

The unique Velodyne controller has a variety of adjustments to ideally match the subwoofer to your listening taste and your installation environment. These adjustments include a low-pass crossover, subsonic filter, phase adjustment, remote digital volume control, and an enclosure type selection to perfectly match the speaker to your enclosure and vehicle. In addition, the controller has several unique proprietary features which enhance both the performance and reliability of the system. A voice coil temperature sensing circuit prevents burnout while gain compression circuits prevent over travel of the cone, making the subwoofer virtually indestructible.

With Velodyne Automotive Subwoofer systems, you can finally achieve musical accuracy down to 20hz and below in a mobile system. Music that's virtually distortion-free. Without the muddy, boomy qualities associated with other bass reproduction systems. Bass that's solid and tight with ideal pitch and tonality. Bass as only the world's best subwoofer company can produce - the distortion - free sound of Velodyne.

Company Profile

About Velodyne

From the company's groundbreaking subwoofer designs in the early 1980s to their present product line, which now also includes complete speaker systems and automotive audio products, Velodyne Acoustics has gained a reputation among loudspeaker manufacturers for innovative design, close-tolerance manufacturing, and exceptional performance.

The vision of founder David Hall set the stage for Velodyne's success as the company was formed in January 1983. His previous work in precision machining, including complex devices for speed measurement, sparked an interest in applying the same motion-sensing and -correcting technology to loudspeaker design: large bass drivers, in particular, stood to gain the most from a distortion-correcting loop. The resulting product line of servo-controlled subwoofers, launched at Summer CES 1984, was enthusiastically received and hailed as a breakthrough comparable in significance to that of Dolby Laboratories' noise reduction technologies. With distortion reduced from the industry loudspeaker norms of 15-20% to less than 1%, the ULD Series of subwoofers made enhanced bass listening a viable option for the audiophile and, in essence, created the subwoofer category which is today so important to both home theater and music listening.

The accelerometer-based servo control which made the ULD Series a success is an important component of many current Velodyne products. The F Series, first introduced in the early 1990s, offers low-distortion sound in compact, cube-style cabinets, with powerful drivers ranging from 10" to a full 18". In Velodyne's initial automotive subwoofer products, the company's patented High Gain Servo technology means the difference between boomy, undefined sound and tight, clean bass.

The phenomenon of home theater has led Velodyne products into a still broader arena. Built with both the demands of the home theater experience and the company's charter of innovation in mind, the design of the VA-X Series of subwoofers combines maximum impact with minimal distortion and broad affordability. Adding the LD Series of satellite speakers creates a precisely matched suite for home theater audio of exceptional clarity and accuracy.

With the mid-1990s introduction of the DF661, the company's first entry into the full-range loudspeaker arena, Velodyne continued to push the envelope of speaker design with its use of innovative materials and design approaches. Projects presently underway, like the HGS (High Gain Servo) Series of subwoofers slated for release later in 1996, will bring still more pioneering advances to the field, using the latest in digital signal processing technology.
In an industry where so much is subjective, Velodyne has consistently and successfully worked to add an objective standard - one based on low distortion, and therefore the greatest fidelity to the original audio material Ò to the many considerations which face discerning listeners. Those listeners have brought the company consistent success, and their ranks are only expected to grow as more and more audio enthusiasts discover the clarity and precision of Velodyne's "Silicon Valley" approach to sound.
